Role and characteristics
Modal is a manufactured cellulose fibre, not directly harvested like cotton.
How to choose
Compare opacity in motion, drape and fabric density. Read blend percentages and care. For a lined garment, also compare that layer’s composition and behaviour. Request the full label when buying used. An advertised fibre may refer only to the exterior; document available information for each part.
Distinguish from
Modal is regenerated cellulose from a modified viscose process with defined mechanical properties. Modal and viscose are distinct composition names.
Limitations and considerations
Modal wording does not demonstrate forest certification or precise origin. A trade name does not replace exact composition.
Frequently asked questions
Can fibre name determine care?
No. Blends, finishes and accessories can change instructions. Read the whole garment label.
Can modal garments contain other fibres?
Yes. Read each percentage; a highlighted name may not describe all composition.
Does the outer fibre name describe the lining?
Not necessarily. Look for separate information when there is a lining.
